Butt joint vs dado cabinet construction: check the part math
See how side thickness and dado depth affect cabinet member width, plus how to review back-panel insets and toe-kick dimensions.

Start with the outside cabinet width
For a simple frameless case with two sides and a top or bottom fitted between them, subtract both side thicknesses from the outside width.
Example: a 30-inch-wide cabinet with two 0.75-inch sides has an inside width of 30 − 0.75 − 0.75 = 28.5 inches. With a butt joint, the member fitted between those sides is 28.5 inches wide before any separate manufacturing allowance.
Add the engagement at both dado joints
When that member seats into a dado in each side, its width includes both engagements. With 0.25 inch of engagement per side, the example becomes 28.5 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 29 inches.
This example assumes equal side thickness and equal engagement on both sides. It does not include a fit allowance or a different construction system. Measure the actual sheet stock and confirm the intended groove and fit before cutting.
Set the construction method before reviewing parts
In CabinetCNCPro, open Construction and choose the cabinet system and default joinery. Butt joint uses square case edges without concealed-joint machining. Dado construction includes the configured engagement depth in the relevant member dimensions.
Dowel and confirmat selections describe construction intent, but fixture-dependent boring is not automatically made safe by choosing a radio button. Review the generated operations and the shop tasks that remain manual.
Back-panel insets are four separate clearances
The top, bottom, left and right back-panel insets are inward clearances from the corresponding side of the case opening. They are not interchangeable with back thickness or dado depth.
Check the generated back-panel width and height after changing them. Increasing left and right clearance reduces the panel width; increasing top and bottom clearance reduces its height. Do not assume the panel fills the outside dimensions of the cabinet.
Keep toe-kick and front dimensions consistent
Toe-kick height changes the available front area on applicable cabinets. Check that the front layout remains above the toe area and that the chosen toe depth fits the case depth. Wall cabinets should not acquire a base-cabinet toe kick merely because a project default exists.
Use the 3D inside view to inspect the case, then review the Parts workspace. The visual model is useful for finding an obvious mismatch, but the part dimensions and an independently checked sample are the production reference.
Verify a simple case before an entire kitchen
Build one cabinet using the stock and construction you actually use. Check side thickness, inside width, top/bottom member width, back-panel dimensions and door reveals by hand. Save it as a reference project before applying the same standards to the rest of the room.
